Use of Emergency Rooms

When poor people were given health insurance, it was believed that this would decrease their dependence on hospital emergency rooms since it would provide them more appropriate, lower cost primary care.

But a recent study that was published in Science journal on Thursday suggested that it’s not true. When you give people Medicaid, they use both primary care and other emergency room services by weight loss.

As Amy Finkelstein an economics professor at MIT and author of the study said:”Medicaid coverage increases emergency department use, both overall and for a broad range of types of visits, conditions, and subpopulations,” So it hasn’t decreased the use of emergency rooms by the poor people.
